What a warning looks like

Example only. Active sanction. The regulator has imposed a sanction.

An example, not about any home above. Homes under an active sanction carry this strip on their label.

How to read a CareRank label

Every home gets the same label, built from the same public data, read the same way. Learn it once and you can read any home in the country.

  1. The verdict

The big word is the home's tier (this one is Very Good). The number is a percentile: "ranks above 68%" means it scored higher than 68 of every 100 rated homes in Australia. Excellent is the top fifth, Very Good the next 30%, Good the next 30%, Below Average the bottom fifth. About 1 in 10 homes don't have enough published data yet, and their label says "Not yet rated".

  2. The working

Five parts make up the score, each scored out of 100 and weighted: residents' experience 30%, compliance and safety 25%, staffing 20%, quality measures 15%, value for money 10%. When a part has no published data, its weight moves to the other parts, and the label says so.

  3. The government's own rating

Star Ratings are published by the Australian Government. We print them exactly as published, next to our score, so you can check one against the other.

  4. The price ticket

The yellow ticket shows the lowest published room price, as a refundable deposit (RAD) or the equivalent daily payment (DAP). Plenty of homes don't publish prices, and when they don't, the ticket says so. RAD vs DAP, explained.

  5. Warnings

If the aged care regulator has an active sanction against a home, its label carries a red warning and the home can't rank above Significant Concerns. Red is used for nothing else on CareRank.

The full scoring method

Same label on every home. Line them up.

Because every label is built the same way, you can put homes side by side and compare them part by part. Add up to four to your comparison.

What goes into a label

Like an ingredients list: every figure comes from a public source, and we name it. No home can pay for a better label, and money never changes a score.

Seven of the 14 national quality indicators (such as hospitalisations and staff turnover) aren't published for individual homes, so we leave them out rather than guess. There are no user reviews yet.
