Datasets: GEN Star Ratings (Q4 2025), Quality Indicators (Q3 2025), accommodation pricing (current), compliance data (current)

Refresh cycle: CareRank scores are recalculated quarterly, aligned with the AIHW GEN Star Ratings release schedule (typically March, June, September, December).

Why the lag? Quality indicator data is collected from providers and validated by AIHW before publication, which typically introduces a one-quarter delay. Compliance actions are reflected as soon as the Commission publishes them.

About Our Data

CareRank aggregates publicly available information about Australian residential aged care facilities. Our data comes from official government sources including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), My Aged Care, and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

For the most up-to-date and authoritative information about any facility, we recommend visiting:

Our Data Sources

1. AIHW GEN Star Ratings Quarterly Extract

The primary source for facility-level star ratings. Includes the overall star rating and four sub-ratings: residents' experience, compliance, staffing, and quality measures. Published quarterly by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

2. National Quality Indicator Program

Provides 14 clinical quality indicators collected from aged care providers and published by AIHW. Includes rates of falls and major injury from falls, pressure injuries, unplanned weight loss, physical restraint use, polypharmacy, unplanned hospitalisations, and other clinical outcomes.

3. My Aged Care Provider Directory

Facility details including name, location, provider, number of places, services offered, specialisations (such as dementia care, culturally specific care), and current vacancy information. This forms the foundation of each facility profile on CareRank.

4. Accommodation Pricing

Room-level accommodation pricing data from My Aged Care, including Refundable Accommodation Deposits (RAD) and Daily Accommodation Payments (DAP). Used to calculate the Value Score by comparing care quality against accommodation cost.

5. Aged Care Quality & Safety Commission

Compliance information including current compliance ratings against the Aged Care Quality Standards, sanctions, notices of non-compliance, and regulatory decisions. This data feeds directly into the Compliance & Safety dimension of the CareRank Score.

Quarterly Refresh Cycle

CareRank scores are recalculated on a quarterly cycle, aligned with the AIHW GEN Star Ratings publication schedule:

  • March: Q4 data (October-December) published by AIHW; CareRank scores updated
  • June: Q1 data (January-March) published; scores refreshed
  • September: Q2 data (April-June) published; scores refreshed
  • December: Q3 data (July-September) published; scores refreshed

Compliance and accommodation pricing data is updated more frequently as the Commission and My Aged Care publish changes on an ongoing basis.

Data Quality

  • We use official NAPS IDs (National Approved Provider System) to match facility data across sources accurately.
  • Facilities with incomplete data may show "N/A" for certain metrics.
  • We validate data during import to catch obvious errors or outliers.
  • If you notice incorrect data for a facility, it likely reflects what is reported in the official sources.
